Seaman Second Class
EDWARD "E" DOBROWOLSKI
U.S. Naval Reserve
USS JOHNSTON (DD 557)
SILVER STAR
From the personal collection
of Mr. Edward F. Mc Clellan

THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
Washington
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the
SILVER STAR MEDAL to
EDWARD "E" DOBROWOLSKI, SEAMAN SECOND CLASS
UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity
in action while attached to the U.S.S. JOHNSTON
when that vessel was severely damaged by enemy Japanese gunfire during
the Battle of Samar in the Southwest Pacific War Area. Courageous
and unwavering in the performance of duty despite the extreme peril,
DOBROWOLSKI remained steadfast at his station and, although the water
had risen to his chest and escaping steam made the magazine almost
unbearable, continued unceasingly at his task of
passing ammunition. His valiant and determined efforts in defense
of the JOHNSTON and his exceptional fortitude under enemy fire reflect the highest credit upon DOBROWOLSKI and the United States Naval
Service."
For the President,
/s/ James Forrestal
Secretary of the Navy
