                "The Navy Cross is presented to Clifton A. F. Sprague, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action from October 18 through 25, 1944, while serving as commander of TU 77.4.3 during the Battle for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States."
