U.S. Escort carrier lays smoke, off Samar

U.S. Navy Photograph

from the personal collection of Mike McKenna

A U.S. Escort carrier of Task Unit 77.4.3 (Taffy III) lays smoke during the Battle Off Samar.  This ship is either ST LO or GAMBIER BAY; both ships used the same camouflage/paint scheme.  By noon on October 25, 1944, both ships would lie at the bottom of the Philippine Sea.  GAMBIER BAY was sunk by the IJN Centre Force; ST LO by a kamikaze suicide plane after the surface action had concluded.
