USS KALININ BAY (CVE 68)

Four heavy calibre shells send water sky-ward as they fall off the aft-starboard quarter of escort carrier USS KALININ BAY (CVE 68).  The KB had the dubious distinction of being one of the hardest hit ships of Taffy III.  She lost 17 men in the engagement and according to the TU 77.4.3 Action Report, had another 52 personnel listed as "wounded."  The action report further stated, "...damage was sustained from fourteen hits by 8 and 6 inch shells, one hit from 14 or 16 inch shell, and from two suicide attacks by Japanese dive bombers."
