USS KALININ BAY (CVE 68)

Three large columns of water from heavy shells rise between USS KALININ BAY (CVE 68) (where this photo was taken from) and another escort carrier of Task Unit 77.4.3.  The CVE in this photograph is probably GAMBIER BAY; both ships came under intense fire by the IJN Centre Force.  KALININ BAY survived the ordeal....GAMBIER BAY lost the use of one engine and was quickly overwhelmed by the Japanese warships.
