Task Unit 77.4.3 under fire

U.S. Navy Photograph

from the personal collection of LT (jg) Russell Wood, USNR
Composite Squadron VC-4, USS WHITE PLAINS (CVE 66)

From left to right . . . . a destroyer escort lays black funnel smoke ahead of an escort carrier which is barely visibly behind the smoke.   To the right of these two ships three distinctive heavy caliber Japanese shell splashes can been seen hitting the water and sending geysers skyward . . . . next to the splash on the right, the third, a FLETCHER Class destroyer, likely HEERMANN, can be seen laying a protective smoke screen.  To the far right and closest to the photographer, an escort carrier lays smoke . . . . and flees from the gunfire of the Imperial Japanese Navy Centre Force on October 25, 1944, during the Battle Off Samar.
