Eight heavy caliber salvos from warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy Centre Force straddle the escort carrier USS GAMBIER BAY (CVE 73) of Task Unit 77.4.3.  The second escort carrier on the left . . . . a safe distance from the shell fire . . . . eerily sails alongside beside the action which resulted in the loss of GAMBIER BAY to naval gunfire.
