The Japanese DD NOWAKI, bottom, was left behind to aid the sinking Japanese CA CHIKUMA, top, to take off her crew. NOWAKI was later caught at San Bernardino Strait at 0054 on 26 October 1944 by the American light cruisers BILOXI, MIAMI, VINCENNES. They set her ablaze and she was finished off by American destroyers MILLER, OWEN, and LEWIS HANCOCK and sank at 0130. Destroyer NOWAKI had many more men aboard her than usual when she was sunk. She spent the better part of the day picking up survivors from the disabled heavy cruiser CHIKUMA. The ordeal faced by the survivors of CHIKUMA was most unfortunate.
