Composite Squadron VC-4, USS WHITE PLAINS (CVE 66)
Approaching Taffy III at low altitude, five kamikaze "Zeke 52" fighters sighted the escort carriers...they climbed sharply to attain a suitable attack position. The escort carriers had Combat Air Patrol aircraft in the air, but they were out of position and unable to intercept the approaching aircraft. The aircraft pictured above was brought under intense AA fire, was hit during its approach, but still crashed close aboard WHITE PLAINS off the port quarter.
