"The main groups had left the ship within five to ten minutes after the word was given. The bridge personnel were given the word by me to leave the bridge, leaving myself, Lt. Comdr. Centner (Air Officer), and Neale, buglemaster, on the bridge. Counting the explosion which occurred when the plane contacted the deck as #1, I believe there were eight major explosions before the ship disappeared beneath the surface."
