Book Recommendations

The following books are arranged in the order in which I added them to BOSAMAR.COM.

"Sea of Thunder"
By Evan Thomas

Sea of Thunder:  Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945 by Evan Thomas is a new book on the Pacific War.  It is written from the perspective of four important players in the battles, including our own CDR Ernest Evans of the USS JOHNSTON

  • Admiral Bill Halsey, USN
  • Commander Ernest Evans, USN
  • Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita, IJN
  • Vice Admiral Matome Ugaki, IJN

The portion of the book that relates to CDR Evans is fascinating and is a must read for any fan of the Battle Off Samar.  I highly recommend it.

"The Spirit of the Sammy-B"
By Rear Admiral Robert W. Copeland, USNR

"The Spirit of the Sammy-B"The full text of RADM Robert W. Copeland's book, "The Spirit of the Sammy-B" was removed from BOSAMAR.COM at the request of the Samuel B. Roberts Association .  The late Whit Felt of the SBR Association gave me permission to post "Sammy-B" on BOSAMAR.COM way back in 1996.

The SBR Association requested I remove it because they are now selling the book to the general public on lulu.com.  Having it posted on BOSAMAR.COM would conflict with their book sales.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

"The Spirit of the Sammy B" is a must-read for any survivor, family member, or enthusiast of the Battle Off Samar.  All sales support the SBR Association so please visit lulu and purchase the book!  It's only $9.99 per copy and you will not be sorry.

"The Last Epic Naval Battle: Voices from Leyte Gulf"
By David Sears

The Last Epic Naval Battle: Voices from Leyte GulfI was contacted by David Sears whose book, The Last Epic Naval Battle: Voices from Leyte Gulf was recently published.

It is available for purchase at his website. David is a New Jersey-based business consultant and author. At first glance his book looks fantastic. His book has received several outstanding reviews.

I highly recommend it!

"The Battle of Leyte Gulf - The Last Fleet Action"
By H. P. Willmott

The Battle of Leyte Gulf - The Last Fleet ActionI came across this book while doing a Google search for Leyte Gulf: H.P. Willmott's, "The Battle of Leyte Gulf - The Last Fleet Action"

Quoting Amazon.com, H.P. Willmott has written extensively on warfare in general and the Second World War in particular. He is a native of Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey.

This book is an excellent read for any enthusiast. I highly recommend it!

"The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors"
By James D. Hornfischer

The Last Stand of the Tin Can SailorsJames Hornfischer's book, "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour" is now nearly legendary.  Published in 2004 it is by far the best account available in recent years on the destroyer action at the Battle Off Samar.

Everyone who is a enthusiast should own a copy of this book!
