THE BATTLE OF LEYTE GULF

CASUALTY LIST

The Americans lost six warships at Leyte Gulf, almost 37,000 tons,
the Japanese lost 26 warships weighing over 306,000 tons.

Five of the six American ships sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf were from Taffy III's action off Samar, four of which, were sunk directly by gunfire from VADM Kurita's Centre Force on October 25, 1944. The costs in lives to Taffy III were 898 dead and 913 wounded. A large majority of these deaths occurred during the two days the crews of CVE GAMBIER BAY, DD JOHNSTON, DD HOEL, and DE ROBERTS tragically spent in the water awaiting rescue. The CVE ST LO of Taffy III was sunk by a kamikaze aircraft shortly after the surface action off Samar on the same day. The remaining carrier, CVL PRINCETON, was sunk earlier by an unrelated Japanese aircraft attack. The figures below do not include those ships damaged on both sides.

  • 1 Light Carrier: PRINCETON
  • 2 Escort Carriers: GAMBIER BAY & ST LO
